Dudley Wines is a family owned and run business on Kangaroo Island. Jeff Howard is a fourth generation Kangaroo Island farmer. He and his wife, Val were looking for a new challenge to complement their life on the land as woolgrowers and beef cattle producers.
Kangaroo Island’s cool climate combined with the limestone soils of their farm, Porky Flat had for years been suggested as a likely place for grape production. So in 1994 Jeff and Val decided to take the plunge with a small 2 acre planting of Shiraz. Dudley Wines now have around 20 acres of various varieties in their two vineyards on the Dudley Peninsula.
The first Dudley wine was the ‘Shearing Shed Red’, a Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend made from the 1997 vintage. As the name suggests, it was made and matured in an annexe of the shearing shed and from humble beginnings, it soon established itself as Kangaroo Island’s most popular tipple, enjoyed by locals and a growing number of interstate and international tourists alike.
Today, Dudley Wines boasts some of the latest winery systems and equipment, housed in buildings specially constructed for the purpose. Adjacent the winery, a cellar has been dug out of the hillside and walled with limestone to provide a suitably cool environment to house 300 barrels of maturing wine and pallets of bottled stocks.
Dudley Wines focus on producing a 100% Kangaroo Island product. All our wine is grown and handcrafted on the island, by fifth generation Islander, Brodie Howard. Our range of bubbly’s, whites and reds reflect the personality of the island, and the winemaker, who enjoys experimenting with unique blends, but has also gained Australia-wide accolades for his traditional wine varietals (including a 4.5 star winery rating from wine critic James Halliday 2011).
All of our wine is competitively priced and available for purchase on our online store.
